The Team Will Flex as You Flex

You are the leader, and your team looks to you for direction. Much like a child learns from his or her parent’s reaction by watching, your team will mirror your reaction to circumstances.

Again, leadership entails owning decisions and embracing the organization’s direction and vision. Effective leadership embodies “we” versus “they.” Imagine, for a moment, that you just came out of a big meeting in which changes were proposed within the organization. You head back over by your team, and they sense fear and anxiety. They see it on your face. How might they react? Anticipate that they will be anxious about the situation. While you are in the meeting, ask questions. Gain clarity. Ensure that everyone in that room shares a common talk track. This is the time to challenge direction and get comfortable with the go-forward plan. The minute you walk out the door, the company is king and you own that direction, along with everyone else who was in that meeting. You walk out with a smile, and your team will be at ease. Inside, you may have some apprehension, but outside, you focus on those whom you serve…your reps. When asked about rumors, keep your team focused on that which they can control. Keep them focused on those they serve…their clients. Do you see the common theme? If we focus on whom we serve and serve them well, everything else is secondary. Be conscious of your verbal and nonverbal communication. Smile and keep moving forward.
